Justin Halsall
Hello Product Hunters! 🚀 I'm Justin Halsall, founder of Record Once, a desktop app transforming video tutorial creation for SaaS companies.

Why Record Once?

I just got tired of the endless cycle of recording a tutorial, making a mistake, re-recording over and over, endless hours of editing! That's why we built Record Once. Our desktop app fixes mistakes & automates editing, allowing you to record your tutorial once and get it right the first time.

Our Journey & Contribution

As a bootstrapped team, we've contributed extensively to rrweb, with 100+ Pull Requests & 200,000+ lines of code. This has not only shaped Record Once but we are also proud to supported the wider open source community.

What Makes Record Once Unique?

  • Effortless Editing: Automated editing saves time and ensures quality.
  • Error Reduction: Minimizes re-recording, streamlining tutorial creation.
  • SaaS-Focused: Tailored for SaaS companies' specific needs.
  • We are serious about supporting open source: our contributions to rrweb.
We're eager to hear your feedback and see how Record Once can revolutionize your video tutorials. A big thank you to the Indie Hackers, Open Source Contributors, and the Product Hunt community. Looking forward to your comments! Best, Justin Halsall, Joris Machielse & Jonno Riekwel #buildinpublic #indiedev #SaaSrevolution #videoediting #rrweb #open-source

Congrats with the launch! Great for any Saas! 🚀
Ralph van der Sanden
@juice10 hi, I see you are from NL? Looks great but the getting started button doesn't work on mobile... ps: I'm also creating a SaaS based on rrweb that allows you to automatically detect this problem before it costs customers. It will launch in Q2 ;)
Justin Halsall
@smilejet thanks for finding that! Yes based in Amsterdam and planning to do an rrweb meetup sometime soon, you should tag along! Would love to see your product in action, and maybe give you some rrweb tips if you'd like.
Ralph van der Sanden
@juice10 Ah great! I'm near Tilburg/Den Bosch. Should definitly do a meetup soon, always love to meet like minded people and to learn. I joined the group ;)
Justin Halsall
@smilejet awesome Ralph! Looking forward to seeing you IRL or AFK ;)

We urgently need such a product, especially for indie hackers. I suggest adding a demo video on the landing pages, which would make the product presentation more intuitive and vivid.
Joris Machielse
@bonvisions Done! There’s a video on the homepage + the PH post now.
Justin Halsall
@bonvisions you are totally right, this launch took us by surprise (we forgot to move the date) so we're scrambling to create a video for it. We have one with the old design, but as we can't use our own product to record ourselves it takes us a while to make one.
Yash
Congrats on your launch! Your tool sounds promising. Have you considered adding a demo video to provide a more intuitive and vivid product presentation?
Joris Machielse
(Justin’s co-founder here) @goyashy: done! There’s a video on the homepage + the PH post now.
Justin Halsall
@goyashy Yes we have, unfortunately we can't use our own tool (desktop app) to record ourselves as we can only record web apps. So we are still trapped in the same painful circle at the moment. This product hunt launch took us by surprise (we where going to move the date, but forgot) and so now @machielse is scrambling to record one
Lukas Rüger
You identified a real problem and built a nice solution, well done! I have the feeling that many customers just need a good demo once that they can then use again and again. How do you plan on monetizing these kinds of customers without "punishing" frequent users with a high price?
Joris Machielse
@lrueger We specifically want to be generous to light users, which is what our a free-forever plan is for. The videos + text-guides of free users have some of our branding. The branding helps us get the word out. So we get something in return. However, we believe there’s a huge untapped market of slightly bigger SaaS companies. We’ve spoken with many of them, and most say something like: “Our users prefer video over text. But creating these videos is a huge amount of work (days/weeks). The minute we release a new version of our SaaS, the videos go out of date, wasting all of the effort.” So they end up deferring the videos until “after the next release” and then the next release. So basically they just don’t make them at all. When making (and updating) those videos only takes a few minutes instead of weeks, that flips the whole problem around. That’s our market. So medium to larger SaaS who need a scalable way to create + maintain a bigger collection of videos. When they get enough value out of our product, we hope they’re happy to pay us a decent amount.
Lukas Rüger
@machielse Thank you for the elaborate and insightful reply! I immediately had to think of a new use case for your product: Some SaaS companies tailor their software to their customers CI, e.g. for Sales or HR purposes. Maybe you can integrate a feature that such demos get tailored to the customers of YOUR customers. This way you would create value for companies that don't have many new versions to create new demo versions for, but also for companies that want to tailor that video to their customer's CI. Since your software doesn't record the screen but uses the JavaScript etc. of the software, maybe this is technically possible? Would love to hear your opinion about this!
Joris Machielse
@lrueger Do you mean where we tailor the content of the video towards the audience of our users? I generally think that our users know best about what to show their users. So we’ve tailored the tool so people can just record whatever demo/explainer that they’re used to giving users in Zoom calls for example. For them that‘s often routine stuff, but if they’d then have to record a video that’s good enough for the website, than things start tumbling down and it takes hours and hours and lots of skills. So we were like: what if you could just record like you’re showing it to their audience as they’re used to, and then we make _that_ great.
Justin Halsall
@machielse @lrueger what do you think Lukas, are you going to record a tutorial/demo video for your PH launch?
Stefan Wirth
Record once, launch often 🚀
Justin Halsall
@nafetswirth I can't believe this took me 4 years before launching it to Product Hunt :O
Stefan Wirth
@juice10 Now every 6 months ;)
Justin Halsall
@nafetswirth we got on the release train! No getting off now :)
Stefan Wirth
@juice10 Exactly! Congratz to #3 btw

I really like the idea. When I used to create videos, I've been always struggling with the introduction. I think something like this would've been helpful at that time. That's something I want to try out in the future and give you feedback then.
Justin Halsall
@mighty_muddy awesome Martin! We'd love your feedback, feel free to hit the 'chat/support' button in the bottom right once you've tried it out, that goes straight to @machielse and I!
Martin Schumacher
@machielse @juice10 I was about to use your software to create a small introduction, but there were some issues in the loading process. I wrote them down in your chat inside your software. I'd love testing the software at another time again.
Joris Machielse
@juice10 @mighty_muddy I was typing a reply in that chat but I was a few seconds too late. You should have it in your email now instead.
Joris Machielse
@juice10 @mighty_muddy we’re also working hard right now to make the AI part faster. Especially with the big traffic surge from PH yesterday, our back-end started to squeak a little bit so we’re working around the clock to make improvements!
Karolina Birnbaum
This project sounds incredibly promising! The concept of using AI to edit video recordings and remove mistakes, all while reducing the need for retakes, is a brilliant innovation. It seems like a fantastic tool for anyone looking to create professional-quality videos quickly and easily. Excited to see how this develops and wish you all the best with this venture!
Justin Halsall
@karolina_salssy thanks Karolina we really appreciate it!
