PostHog gives us a single platform for analytics, session replay, feature flags, A/B testing, and funnels — no stitching together 5 separate tools. Self-hostable, open source, and built for developers.

What needs improvement

Session replay needs privacy controls for sensitive form fields. Feature flags aren't tied to our subscription plans yet. We're not tracking match_without_full_team — that's a missed conversion signal. And our funnel

visibility from paywall view → subscription start is still blind.

vs Alternatives

Mixpanel, Amplitude, and Google Analytics. PostHog beat them on: open source, no per-event pricing, session replay built-in, and feature flags without a separate tool.

I’ve been using PostHog for about 3 months, and it has quickly become one of my favorite tools for understanding and improving our product. What I like: The web and product analytics dashboards are intuitive and provide deep insights into user behavior. Session replay has been incredibly helpful in identifying UX issues and understanding how real users interact with features. The feature flag functionality makes controlled rollouts super easy — no need for extra infrastructure or tools. I love that everything (analytics, replays, feature flags, and experiments) is built into one platform, which saves a ton of time switching between tools.

I think they have a great platform and right abstractions of events, actions, etc. that's getting more feature rich every week and it's great that since it's still a somewhat young project they are really open to feedback and suggestions and actually are able to continually deliver improvement in the product on an ongoing basis which is pretty delightful as an end user. Last thing that's a biggie for me too is the great culture and openness of the project and team - it's just been so easy and painless to work with them. Even if we do run into some sort of issue or feature we might want to see in the product - its as simple as a feature request in the GH repo and can have full transparency and tracking on it from there as well as see if other users feel the same way. So this lets you feel like you can easily be part of the community around PostHog and help to continually make it better.

As an open-source product OS, it provides us with deep insights into how job seekers are actually using our AI interview coach. Understanding user journeys through its powerful analytics and session replay tools allows us to pinpoint exactly where users get the most value – whether it's prepping with tailored Q&A, practicing in mock interviews, or getting live suggestions – and identify areas where we can make the experience even smoother and more effective. Furthermore, PostHog's feature flags and experimentation capabilities are crucial for us. They enable our team to safely test and roll out new enhancements, like improvements to our real-time suggestion algorithms or UI adjustments, ensuring we continuously iterate based on real data, not just guesswork. This helps us build a more robust and user-centric tool, ultimately helping more people feel confident and prepared to ace their interviews. We genuinely couldn't build Acedit as effectively without the clarity PostHog provides.

Love PostHog!!! I have used many similar (but less developer focused and less product led) tools in this space and it's like night and day going from something like an old school stodgy enterprise software approach (i won't name names :) ) that's not at all flexible or adaptable to the much more modern, developer first, event based approach of PostHog. For example - you want your events to stream into BigQuery - no problem they have a plugin for that - and "it just works" (https://github.com/PostHog/bigqu...). With other vendors they would usually try and turn something like this into an expensive up-sell and put obstacles in the way of you actually getting back your own events out of the platform. I think they have a great platform and right abstractions of events, actions, etc. that's getting more feature rich every week and it's great that since it's still a somewhat young project they are really open to feedback and suggestions and actually are able to continually deliver improvement in the product on an ongoing basis which is pretty delightful as an end user. Last thing that's a biggie for me too is the great culture and openness of the project and team - it's just been so easy and painless to work with them. So this lets you feel like you can easily be part of the community around PostHog and help to continually make it better. I'll stop now though as this is looking like some sort of paid sponsorship almost :) Actually, to be balanced i'll give one of the small "con's" i've found. - It's still not quite as feature rich (yet - and maybe never will be as its not trying to be all things to everyone) as something like Google Analytics. But like i said i've been surprised how quickly they have been able to continually deliver new features and be thoughtful about the sort of features they would like to focus on vs those that might be more of a distraction longer term. So with GA you might have features for all sorts of things you never even realised, and that can be great, but you have to really fit your approach into the specific GA implementation etc and that can be limiting in the longer term and good luck getting your data back out to enrich it with some other system you use. For us a simple, clean, modern, event based approach to our product analytics has actually allowed us to think about our telemetry in different ways that would not have been possible in the traditional GA approach. Being able to just define whatever events you want and put whatever in them you want and have it all just work has kinda been like a super power for us in trying to become much more product led at Netdata. PostHog allowed us to observe how early users interacted with Source's onboarding flow. We found that there were some confusing steps in the onboarding which we removed to smooth out the activation flow. Without PostHog, we would have never checked the self-serve / PLG motion for our business as quickly as we did.
