BePresent is well-known for turning phone screen-time reduction into a gamified, Duolingo-like experience—great for motivation, streaks, and lightweight accountability on mobile. But the alternatives landscape spans everything from “hard” enforcement to “soft” behavior change: Focus Bear leans into cross-device blocking plus structured routines (with strong appeal for ADHD/AuDHD users), Unpluq adds physical friction via an NFC tag to make overrides meaningfully harder, and Zario focuses on AI-coach style challenges to build better habits over time. On the gentler end, clearspace uses micro-pauses (even optional physical actions) to interrupt impulse opens without going cold turkey, while Barrier goes ultra-minimal with simple time-boxing for social apps.
In evaluating BePresent alternatives, we focused on the type and strength of intervention (blocking vs friction vs coaching), cross-device coverage, ease of setup and day-to-day usability, reliability and trust signals (especially around subscriptions), and how well each option fits different goals—from deep work and study support to simply reducing doomscrolling. We also considered flexibility (unlock rules, scheduling fit), integration needs, and whether the product’s tone feels supportive versus punitive, since that often determines long-term adherence.
