We use the Vercel AI SDK and AI Gateway for LaterOn's writing assistant. You highlight text in an email draft, type what you want, like "shorter" or "less formal", and it rewrites the selection in place. Before the Gateway, we ran our own router with hand-written try/catch fallbacks to a second provider and kept keys for each one. Now it's one generateText call with a model string. The Gateway handles failover, and trying a new model is a one-line change with no new keys. Because the assistant is cheap and rarely goes down, it's in every compose box instead of being a premium extra. The AI credits in each plan go to the heavier work: triaging and summarizing every inbound email, and running workflows that reply and follow up on their own.

Thanks to Claude Code, which makes everything easy now 😂 Now, LaterOn has become a complete email platform that can send and receive all types of emails. It also includes a built-in calendar and booking system to schedule your time. Yes, you can use your custom domain as well 😻 One of my favorite features is Workflow.
