While Canva is great overall, there are a few areas where it could improve. Some of the best templates and elements are locked behind the premium plan, which can be a bit limiting if you’re using the free version.
Also, when working on heavy or complex designs, it sometimes feels a bit slow. More advanced customization options would be helpful too, especially for users who want more control over design details.
That said, these are minor issues compared to how useful and easy the platform is.
Canva Brush is a new vision-language model for design, built by Canva Research. It sees your design, understands how it’s put together, and makes the changes you ask for, from a single line of copy to every slide in a deck.
Problem: Generating a design is hard for AI, but editing one is harder. The model has to understand what you want to change, how the design is structured, and what has to stay exactly as it is. Otherwise a simple edit request can come back with a pile of changes you didn’t ask for.
Solution: Brush works through an agentic loop. It writes and runs code to adjust design elements, then inspects the page to guide its next step. Everything it creates is fully editable like any other Canva design, so you can take over in the editor whenever you want.
What makes it different: It’s built for design editing, not general chat. Brush started from a leading open-weights model, which Canva post-trained on real design and editing tasks, then added large-scale reinforcement learning with a reward system that scores visual quality, layout, and whether the task was completed as requested.
Canva says its definition of “good” is set by professional designers on its team. Per Canva, it’s up to 69% faster and 46% lower cost per edit task than Canva’s previous design agent, and in internal testing it matched or exceeded the previous setup on most editing tasks.
Key features:
Restyle an image or design, like changing the colour scheme, the weather or the vibe
Change a multi-page design in one prompt, instead of editing every header by hand
Remix a design for another channel, like turning a slide into an Instagram graphic
Fully editable output, with every element still yours to change
Select “Brush” from the dropdown in Canva AI
Who it’s for: Canva users who spend time on repetitive design edits, from solo creators to teams working on multi-page decks and campaigns.
Try it by opening a design in the editor or going to Canva AI, and read the announcement.

@rohanrecommends As a designer, the part that matters most to me is "what has to stay exactly as it is". That's where AI edits usually break a layout.
Real use case from this week: I localized our app's store visuals into 14 languages. The hardest part wasn't translating, it was German words twice as long, Chinese characters, and Arabic flipping right-to-left without breaking the composition. Curious if Brush handles that kind of "same design, new language" edit, especially RTL. That would save designers days.
Congrats to the Canva Research team! Fellow maker launching today 🚀
I've been using Canva for years, from university presentations to our app's marketing visuals, so this one is exciting to see.

Love that Brush focuses on editing rather than generating, and keeping everything fully editable is a thoughtful touch. Congrats on the launch!
