There's an Indian startup that does this for Indian tourism called AudioCompass.

@utekkare Hi, Thanks for the info. unfortunately it crashes on ios 8 but i will definitely check it out. We know that this area is targeted A lot so we build yapQ as fun as simple as we could. As you may see you start getting the info right after you open the app. We believe this is an advantage in a world of content and this is our distinctiveness from other players on this filed.

@saoron so you would offer free content to bring in the customers? Conversion rates from free to paid are as low as 3% (so I've heard) - Also, play rates are extremely erratic because of the audio download sizes - esp when travelling - if it has to serve an impulse need, download times can be a barrier.. Just my $0.02

@utekkare We currently offering both online and offline experience. The online use is absolutely free , and the offline will cost 1-10$ depend on the location you are at.So you need to choose whether to pay us or to pay your mobile company. As for the audio download we use native TTS algorithm so no audio is transmitted just compressed text.

yapQ is a brand new travel app that behaves like your own personal tour guide. The application provides informative audio tour guides worldwide.

What have you learned about your customers so far? Who is finding this app useful?
Yossi Neiman
@Percival We notice that a major part of our user is above the age of 35 -40, And after a short Facebook campaign find out that the download rate increased while a user where on a trip.
Sean Percival
Looks like today the tours are free? Do you plan to offer paid tours in the future and if so what do you anticipate the cost will be for a tour?
Yossi Neiman
@Percival We wont charge for online use. But if you want to experience yapQ abroad and have no internet connection we have a variety of offline packages varies from 1 - 10 $. Also we plan to sell indoor packages for museum and galleries (indoor navigation with iBeacons).

I see the apps are live so tell me about traction so far. How many downloads and/or MAU?
Yossi Neiman
@Percival Hi, We have ~3K Users on both platform. 75% returning users.
Sean Percival
@saoron That return user behavior feels very high. Is this over a short period of time like less than 30 days?
Yossi Neiman
@Percival Yes I count on a period of 7 days. The overall returning users since launch is about 60-65%
Sean Percival
How are you sourcing guides? Why are these people the best to be giving the tour. One concern I would have as a consumer is quality of tour content.
Yossi Neiman
@Percival All of out data comes from Wikipedia. We plan to do some integration with Foursquare soon. The data is very important to us because we actually sell it. It have to be perfect.
Sean Percival
@saoron Ok so humans are not creating the audio tours? It's all public data driven?
Yossi Neiman
@Percival Yes.Its not really a tour yapQ will not tell you where to go or what to do next. yapQ is great for expending your knowledge about your current location . The ideal experience is freelancing in an unknown area and asking yapQ like it was your local friend "whats around"
Sean Percival
Do you have any questions for me?
Yossi Neiman
@Percival I am a feedback junkie so I would love to hear your opinion on yapQ both from a user and business perspective :)
