What's up Producthunt? ๐ฝ
This is my first launch on Producthunt, let me give some more information about my product:
โก๏ธ What is it?
Workmode is a (progressive) web application. The goal of this app is to help the user find the best place to work from, depending on the location or search query of the user.
๐คThe problem
I made this app while traveling and working in Southeast Asia. During my travels, there were moments of frustrations looking for a good place to work with a solid download speed. When I finally found a cool cafe and bought my latte, the first thing I would do is test the internet speed. There's nothing worse than sitting in a cool coffee shop with your MacBook open, ready for work to find out the download speed is 80 Kbps. Finding a good workplace with a solid download and upload speed in some areas of the world can be tough. Out of this frustration I created Workmode.
The initial idea of Workmode is to crowdsource the download speed of workplaces from all over the world, one speed test at a time. In addition to the internet speed, a questionnaire is also shown in order to review the workability of a workplace. The speedtest and questionnaire results are saved and shown to users when they are close by or do a search for the region where the workplace is located.
โ๏ธ How does it work?
When the user opens the application, the system checks if the geolocation is accurate and if any workplaces are nearby. If this is the case, the system will show the workplaces that are available for testing. When no places can be found or when the accuracy is below par, a general speedtest will be executed without the data being saved to the server.
General information about the listed workplaces is sourced from Google and Foursquare. This information is merged with the crowdsourced data that is submitted by the users of Workmode.
Tech stack: NGINX, Node Express, JS and HTML.
๐ Any comments, tips, and suggestions are MORE than welcome! Thanks a lot, guys.
@joe_xavier Fill up the site with workplaces or speed results? The workplaces are from Google and Foursquare, hoping to expand this in the near future. There is no way of adding custom places at the moment but I have some ideas on how to implement this when the correct place can not be found.
The system automatically submits the speedtest information and questionnaire results to the server when and if the system recognises the current workplace.

Not really a great alternative to Workfrom, sorry
Pros:
Doesn't have a lot of places, no community, times are inaccurate, not a lot of pictures, web only.
Cons:
This is just a straight up copied version of Workfrom.com - just without the community and functionality
Hey @narwhalguide , first of all, thanks for your review. The workplace data on Workmode is sourced from Google and Foursquare by using their API's. The information on Workfrom is submitted by the users, Workmode aggregates information of other websites that already have a lot of information available.
Testing the speed of a workplace is central in my web app. The system recognizes when a user is located in a workplace and submits this data to the server so other users can easily check the speed results of workplaces nearby.

This service displayed all the nice spots around here. Workfrom returned "Nothing found nearby, but there's always tomorrow!"

Nice design and really like the connection speed test
Pros:
Solves my remote work issues when I just want a small local coffee shop to grab a coffee and get some work done
@nickchuckwalter lmao I'm using the Google Places and Foursquare API. The Google API considers each image request as an API request which means each page load equals to 20+ requests. This got pretty pricey even while testing the app fml. So I decided to disable it and replace it with awesome placeholders for the time being.
