I made my biggest mistake with Votap

We’ve been requiring every new user to start a free trial before entering the app. They could cancel immediately and never pay anything. Our reasoning seemed solid: prevent bots and let everyone experience the full version of Votap from day one.

The data says otherwise. Only around 1 in 5 installs starts the trial, and we’ve started hearing the obvious complaint: “I don’t want to enter payment information just to try the app.”

But the bigger problem is that Votap gets better with every person who joins. More people means more votes, better data and, most importantly, more conversations and opinions in the comments.

We were basically suffocating the thing that makes Votap valuable by stopping 4 out of 5 people at the door.

So we’re changing it. Everyone will be able to enter Votap for free, explore, vote and participate without starting a trial. Premium will be there when they discover features they actually find valuable.

Because the “aha moment” in a social app might not happen during onboarding. It might happen days later during a breaking event, an interesting vote or a great conversation in the comments.
