Do you tell clients when AI helped build their site?

by•

On client projects I use AI for a lot of the routine work: boilerplate, error log reading, first drafts of code. I review and test everything before it goes live, but I have not settled on how much to say about it.

Some clients like hearing it because the work is faster. Others read it as less effort, even when the result is the same or better. Staying silent feels wrong to me, but a long disclosure feels like an excuse.

If you build for clients, do you mention AI up front, only when asked, or in the handover notes? Has it ever changed how a client reacted or what they agreed to pay?

I build my own product rather than for clients, so take this as the view from outside. I think the "less effort" reaction comes from pricing by hours. If the quote is for the result, a working site that's been tested on real phones, then how you got there is your process, like which editor you use. I'd mention it in the handover notes as one line next to what you checked by hand, because the checking is what the client is really paying for. The review and testing you already do is the part worth describing in detail. Has any client actually asked you directly yet?
