Hey Hunters! Tomasz here, the solo dev behind Verso.
Why I built this:
I switched to Mac last year and realised every proper word processor wants a subscription. Word is $99/year. Ulysses is $40/year. Even the "cheap" ones nickel-and-dime you for features.
I didn't need cloud sync. I didn't need AI. I didn't need collaboration. I just needed to write ā with .docx compatibility so I could exchange files with Word users without formatting breaking.
So I built my own. Native Mac app (SwiftUI, not Electron). 8 MB total. $14.99 one-time. No account, no telemetry, no "please subscribe" popups.
What you get:
- Full .docx import/export (tested against real Word files)
- Focus mode (everything fades except the paragraph you're writing)
- Track changes + comments
- 16 languages including Arabic, Japanese, Chinese
- Dark mode, page themes, Markdown round-trip
- Ships with your files locally. No cloud. No tracking.
The stack:
- SwiftUI + AppKit
- 100% local (no server, no database, no API calls)
- Built in public from my flat in Brighton
I'd love your feedback. Fair warning: I'm allergic to em dashes and venture-scale buzzwords.
