Velocity - A self-hosted flight and ship tracker you can rewind

by•
Velocity tracks live aircraft (ADS-B) and ships (AIS) from public feeds with no API keys, records every position it sees to your own disk, and lets you drag a scrubber to rewind the map. Aircraft also replay from public archives back to 2024. Area alerts go to Discord, a webhook or ntfy. Every contact shows which feed reported it and how old the fix is. It also runs as an MCP server, so an agent can ask what is flying somewhere right now. docker compose up, AGPL-3.0.

Hi Product Hunt, I built Velocity because the free trackers keep shrinking their history: Flightradar24 now needs a subscription past 12 hours, and MarineTraffic cut its free window to 24. Velocity runs on your own machine (docker compose up, no API keys) and records every aircraft and ship position it sees to your own disk. Mine has 132M positions since August in 27 GB. Drag the scrubber and the map rewinds. What I use it for: an alert when a military or emergency aircraft enters an area I care about, and checking what was flying or sailing near something after it made the news. What's rough: coverage is only as good as the public feeds and thin over oceans, and the 3D globe wants a decent GPU (there's a lighter 2D map). I built it with a lot of help from Claude Code and review every change. It's free and open source. Happy to answer anything.
