Ugát - Learn Filipino languages, one root at a time.

by
Ugát is for learning Filipino languages, one root at a time. This means instead of memorising phrases, you awaken one root word each day, explore how affixes transform meaning, and build a daily ritual around understanding real language patterns. Not just for "Filipino", but also Cebuano, Chavacano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon and more. Built for the diaspora, heritage learners or the curious. Awaken your ugát!

Hi there, I’m Sean, the creator of Ugát. Ugát is born from my own personal pain: of years spent sitting around dinner tables but not being able to participate. Of struggling to understand my own identity, culture and place in the Filipino diaspora. It’s the gift I wish I could’ve given my younger self. The learning methodology of Ugát, “one root at a time”, came from a key realisation: diaspora learners don’t start from zero. We carry fragments. Words from our lolas, titos, titas, cousins, parents. But fragments aren’t enough to construct. And construction is the hard part. Conjugation in Filipino languages is notoriously difficult. A single root can transform into multitudes of meanings through affixes, focus, and aspect. Ugát was made to make that system feel like coming home. Each day, you awaken one root word, explore how it transforms, and build a daily ritual. I'm a designer, not a developer. AI helped me build Ugát. But it didn’t create the years of struggling with Tagalog, my rabbit holes into Filipino history, or the love poured into every visual, sound and interaction. That part is human. If you’re a diaspora Filipino, someone trying to pass language on to your kids, or simply curious about the languages of the Philippines, I’d love for you to try Ugát. It all starts from the roots.
