tinyfeed is a minimalist, unintrusive approach to social interaction online. Your tinyfeed consists of only the most recent status updates from those you care about. One status per person. Updated in real-time. That's it.
What would everyone think of the idea of having both a Private feed and a Public feed? This would allow you to post separate updates to either by choice. It would also lead to a lot greater discovery because the Public feed will contain posts from ALL users, not just friends. Thoughts?

@owen_schebella Yes, great suggestion! I'd love to have both for sure
@owen_schebella I think this would be a great idea! But like other people have mentioned, the balance between enough features vs. too-much-like-social-media needs to be solved. You mentioned no history; I was curious about what would happen if I missed a friend's update but didn't want to miss it?
@catherine_chen Yes it's a fine line for sure! I think it will be a lot of trial and error adding/removing features to find the balance. I think the hard thing to work out is what IS actually useful and what is simply what we are all used to (for better or worse).
In regards to missing a friend's update: I guess you'll just have to check in more often! :p
@owen_schebella@catherine_chen You're not wrong. It's certainly something that is a tricky thing to solve (at least elegantly). The 2 main ways to solve would be to a) have push notifications or b) save updates. Both present issues. Am open to other solutions as I certainly don't have all the answers!

There is a definite market for a new social media network in a similar style to Twitter but with a different approach to how it is operated. Something that has less data invasion, more simplicity and better user protections too.
I have often thought about workable solutions for making Twitter more user-friendly and accessible, while improving the moderation side, the only issue is that I am not a developer to build it, nor a marketeer to get people to use it. haha.
But a product like this definitely could be a foundation for a better, more enjoyable site that ticks all the boxes for issues current social media has. It just needs more features added without losing the simple to use nature of it, a better name, and a revenue stream that enables it to remain free to use for the user. All of which are easy challenges to overcome.
@exopaul thanks for your comment, Paul. Yes its definitely a first step. I wanted to open it up early and get as much feedback as I can to improve and expand it.

@exopaul@owen_schebella I couldn’t agree more. This has so much potential. I’m working on a project to empower individuals with control over their own data. We’re trying to find some early partners to work with to achieve a bigger mission. Are you open to that type of thing? I’d love to learn more about your vision.
@robmoore Hi there, I've just added the ability to invite friends via email directly from the Add friend section inside tinyfeed. Hopefully this will help with discovery!
Hello Product Hunt 🖐️
tl;dr – tinyfeed is a minimalist, unintrusive approach to social interaction online. Your tinyfeed consists of only the most recent status updates from those you care about. One status per person. Updated in real-time. Thanks for taking a look! The Problem
So, I am completely over social media today and everything that comes along with it...
From the ads, to the data collection (and distribution), the whole "like-economy" and the insecurity/ body dis-morphia/fomo this manifests, to the cognitive load of so many images and videos to the cyber bullying that goes on via direct messaging, oh and the constant demand for my time and attention. The longer social media develops, the less it feels about about "social" and more about "media and marketing" As a marketing tool it is unparalleled but as a social tool, I feel like it has completely lost it's way.
I wanted a way to keep in touch with the people I actually cared about, even (and especially when life gets in the way), and even when I don't always have time to call or email.
The Solution
tinyfeed! yay
A minimalist, unintrusive, amnesic social feed built on privacy and simplicity at its core.
You can use it solo, as a kind of minimalist bio page by posting publicly or with your friends and family to keep in the loop with all of them and only them by posting privately. Privacy is at the core of tinyfeed.
tinyfeed will never demand your time or attention, it will not collect your data (in fact it only keeps your current status by design), it will not send you notifications or bombard you with visuals, it will not sell you ads, it WILL heal your social media addiction if you have one and it WILL keep you in touch with everyone you care about (without losing touch on your real life)
If any of this resonates with you feel free to give it a try! And if you need anything or have any ideas or improvements please feel free to email me or press the big purple Feedback button in the app! Thank you so much!
UPDATE: If you want to search for friends via username I have updated the icon to make it a bit more obvious 👤➕ I realize the search icon was not self explanatory at all. UPDATE 2: By popular demand, I have added the ability to invite your friends via email. This is available via the same Add friends menu mentioned above.
looks great Owen, that's all I'm expecting from a social media platform. But you need discover tools and get the interaction going; I'm not sure if that's against the original idea you had.
@alkin_inan Thank you! It certainly isn't against the original idea but social sites are obviously a bit tricky to navigate in terms of discovery; the whole chicken vs the egg problem. If you have any suggestions I will definitely look to implement! I have the ideas and the concepts but certainly not all the answers! I'm an empty cup in that regard!
