The idea came from a genuinely frustrating moment. I was deep into exam prep, surrounded by hundreds of pages of lecture notes and PDFs, and I kept thinking all the information I need is already here, I just can't access it fast enough. Generic AI tools would hallucinate or give me textbook answers that had nothing to do with my actual course material. I needed something grounded in my documents.
So I built the first version just for myself: upload a PDF, ask it questions, get cited answers pulled directly from the text. That worked. But then I noticed I wasn't actually retaining anything I was just retrieving. That's when the scope expanded.
The core insight that shaped everything: retrieval and learning are two different things. A search engine finds information. A study tool builds understanding. So StudyRAG evolved from a document chat into a full learning workflow quizzes that adapt to your weak spots, flashcard decks generated from your own notes, structured study modules, and exam simulations all anchored to the exact material you uploaded.
The hardest part wasn't the AI. It was figuring out what a student actually needs at 11pm before an exam versus three weeks out. A lot of early assumptions got thrown out.
We're live with a free plan no credit card needed. Would love your honest feedback, especially if you've tried other study tools and hit their limits. What's the hardest part of your study workflow right now?
