SpoolTap - Smart NFC filament & spool tracking for Android

by
SpoolTap is a standalone Android app to manage your 3D printing filament—no servers or Docker required. Built with Jetpack Compose, it uses affordable NFC tags to instantly track and update spool weights with a simple phone scan. Perfect for stock printers (Bambu, Prusa, Anycubic) where server setups are too complex. It features a modern Material You design and is a fair, one-time purchase with absolutely no subscriptions or ads.

Hey Product Hunt community! I’m the maker of SpoolTap. I’ve been a software developer for over 15 years, but recently I decided to dive into native Android development using Jetpack Compose. As an avid 3D printing hobbyist, I quickly ran into a common problem: a massive pile of half-used filament spools and no easy way to track their weights. While there are great open-source server ecosystems out there, they usually require a Raspberry Pi, Docker, or a Klipper setup. I wanted something completely standalone and plug-and-play for casual users or people with stock printers (like Bambu, Prusa, or Anycubic). That’s why I built SpoolTap. By slapping cheap NFC stickers onto the spools, you can just scan them with your phone to instantly update or check your inventory. To keep the project sustainable for future updates while respecting the community, I consciously chose a fair, one-time purchase ($5) instead of a annoying monthly subscription or ad-model. I’m fully committed to polishing this app and adding more features based on user feedback. I'd love to hear your thoughts, questions, or ideas for future updates! Happy printing!

Tapping a cheap NFC sticker on my Bambu spools and seeing the weight update instantly without spinning up anything was a genuinely nice surprise, and the Material You layout feels right at home on my phone.

Thank you so much for the awesome feedback! I'm thrilled to hear that the instant NFC workflow and the "Material You" layout are hitting the mark for you. That seamless, no-latency experience is exactly what I was aiming for.

Just a quick tip in case you haven't tried it yet: you can actually read the integrated NFC tags on your Bambu Lab spools directly with the app. No extra stickers needed!

Thanks again for your support on Product Hunt!

The Material You theming is a really nice touch, especially for a tool that lives on your phone constantly while you swap spools. Loving that it leans on NFC instead of forcing people into a whole server setup.

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

Tapping a tag and seeing the spool weight update instantly is genuinely satisfying, and the lack of any server setup makes it actually usable for my Bambu setup. Material You looks clean too.

Thanks a ton for the great feedback!

"Genuinely satisfying" is exactly how it should feel.

Thanks for the support!

Love that you went with NFC tags instead of building yet another proprietary scale system. Smart call for the stock-printer crowd who just wants to tap a spool and know what's left.

Thank you! That means a lot.

You absolutely got the vision behind it.

Thanks for the great feedback and for supporting the launch!

How does the app handle a filament swap mid-print if the NFC tag is still on the spool you just pulled off, does it auto-pause or is that all manual?

There might be a slight misunderstanding of how the app works!

SpoolTap is a passive tracking utility and does not connect to or control your printer. It won't auto-pause your print because it doesn't know what the printer is doing in real-time.

Instead, it's designed for your manual workflow: you simply tap the spool with your phone before or after a print (or when weighing it) to update and log the remaining weight in your digital inventory. It keeps your stock organized without interfering with the print job itself!

finally someone made filament tracking that doesn't ask me to spin up a whole home server just to weigh a spool. love that it's a flat one-time buy too, no subscription nonsense for what should be a simple tool.

Thank you so much! You hit on two of the exact reasons why I built this.

I strongly believe that a utility tool like this should just work out of the box without the overhead of maintaining a home server. And I'm totally with you on the pricing—no one needs another subscription in their life just to keep track of their filament. A simple tool deserves a simple, honest one-time buy.

Thanks for the awesome feedback and for supporting the launch!
