Spintax has a reputation problem, and it's mostly deserved
by•
The word comes from 2000s SEO, where it meant swapping synonyms until a text was unrecognisable to a filter and to a human. Fair enough — that was garbage.
The thing itself is just a template language: alternatives, orderings, conditionals, plurals. Same category as ICU MessageFormat, only aimed at producing many variants instead of one localized string. Cold email, product feeds, multi-locale landings.
So: is the term salvageable, or should this have been called something else from day one? I'm genuinely unsure, and I've already shipped under the name.
