Speed Reading - See it for a split second, then type it back from memory

by•
A row of letters and numbers flashes for a split second - then you type it back from memory. Unlike passive speed reading apps, active recall trains your visual span, short-term memory and focus. 6 difficulties x 9 levels, from 150 to 650+ characters per minute. New in this update: a result screen with your reading speed and how much faster the next level is, statistics with your progress over time, tablet layouts and 22 languages. Free on Android, no subscription.

Hi Product Hunt! 👋 I first released Speed Reading back in 2014 as a tiny side project. This autumn I finally gave it the update it deserved, so I'd love to share it here again. The idea: most speed reading apps flash words at you and you just watch. Here you have to type back what you saw - a short row of characters that's on screen for a split second. That active recall is what trains how much text your eyes take in at one glance, and how long you can hold it. What's new: • a result screen that shows your reading speed and how much faster the next level is • statistics: speed over time, mistakes per game, all 54 levels at a glance • fresh level selection, tablet layouts, 22 languages It's free (ads, with an optional one-time purchase to remove them and unlock all levels - no subscription). I'd really like to hear: what's the fastest level you can pass? And if something feels too hard or too easy at the start, tell me - that's exactly the feedback I'm after. 🙏

I've tested it and the first levels seemed easy, but once numbers and letters get mixed it's getting challenging..... I like that i have to type it back, to actively recalling, not just repeating what i saw. Is there a trick to remembering the mixed rows, or is it just practice?

Thanks for testing it, Franta! You're right, the mixed rows are where the real training starts. Mostly it's practice, but a few tricks help:

  • chunk it: see the row as 2-3 small groups instead of single characters (like K7P 4MX)

  • look at the middle of the row, not the first character, your eyes pick up the edges anyway

  • say it in your head while it flashes, sound sticks better than the picture alone

Most people find the mixed rows click after a few days. Which level are you on now?
