"We’ll just build it ourselves" is the most expensive sentence in AI

hey PH 👋 Ola here, Specsight is launching today 🚀

I talk to a lot of teams shipping fast with AI. nobody argues the problem isn’t real, their product changes every day and nobody can keep up with what’s live. but the reply I hear most is "we’ll just build an agent for that. simple"

is it though? 😅 when teams actually try, I ask them three things:

  1. how much momentum did you lose building and fixing an internal tool instead of your own product?

  2. does anyone actually use it, or is it another side project nobody opens?

  3. do you trust what it says enough for sales or support to rely on it?

because building something is one thing. keeping it accurate on a codebase that changes every day, maintaining it, and getting people to actually rely on it is a whole product on its own

one team I work with built their own version. it worked for a while, then they switched to Specsight

so I’m curious, what internal tool did your team build that you later regretted?

I think if you don't make the calculation, how much time does it actually cost me to build and to maintain an internal tool, especially if you take opportunity costs for your own product and speed into the calculation, I think for most, the calculation would not look good. Maybe if you have a really big team & you pay a fortune in licenses. P.S. cool product! I think a lot of people just vibe code the hell out of it and lose complete track of what they are doing, and then maintaining it is complete chaos.

100%, and opportunity cost is the part everyone forgets. it’s not just the hours building it, it’s every week maintaining it instead of shipping what customers pay for. and that’s exactly why Specsight is priced per company, not per seat, so the whole team gets it without paying a fortune in licenses

and thanks!! you’re so right about vibe coding. it’s fun until nobody, including the person who built it, knows what’s in the product anymore. have you seen that happen in your team?
