SpeakEasy - macOS-native dictation. Apple Intelligence. Fully on-device.

by
SpeakEasy lives in your macOS menu bar. Press a hotkey from any app, speak, press it again. Your words get transcribed and pasted where your cursor is. That's it. Apple Intelligence cleans things up: fixing grammar, killing filler words, turning "dot com" into .com. Everything runs on Apple's on-device models. Nothing touches a server. No cloud, no third-party models, no accounts, no data collected. Your voice never leaves your Mac. Built in Swift, signed and notarized by Apple. Free to use.

Hey everyone! There's no shortage of dictation apps out there, both paid and open source. But every one I tried either shipped its own models, needed extra downloads, or relied on cloud APIs. I didn't want any of that. I wanted something built entirely on Apple's native tooling. No extra dependencies, no third-party models, just the on-device AI that already ships with your Mac. I also wanted an excuse to really dig into what Apple's native frameworks can do now. SpeakEasy was a way to explore that. The simplest flow is: hit a hotkey from any app, talk, hit it again, and clean text gets pasted at your cursor. But there's a lot you can configure. Push-to-talk or toggle mode, customizable hotkeys, different cleanup presets (formal, casual, technical, etc.), custom AI instructions, a review step where you can revise with voice notes before pasting, and a full transcription history. Apple Intelligence handles all the heavy lifting. Transcription, grammar cleanup, stripping filler words, and translating spoken shortcuts into real syntax ("slash settings" becomes /settings, "dot com" becomes .com). I built it for my own development workflow, so the features reflect that. The stuff I actually needed day to day. I'll be real, it's not perfect. There are better paid tools out there. But I've been dog-fooding this since day one and it hits that sweet spot for me between speed and quality while keeping everything on-device and private. Nothing leaves your Mac. No accounts, no cloud, no data collection. Free, requires macOS 26 Tahoe. Hope it's useful to some of you. Always open to feedback and GitHub issues.
