Why we rebuilt ShiftMate for iPad and Android tablets

by•

For years, most people used ShiftMate on their phones.

And that made sense.

A phone is perfect when you just want to answer one question:

“What shift am I working tomorrow?”

But we started noticing something different when users wanted to plan an entire month.

A nurse’s calendar can contain Day, Evening, Night, Off, annual leave, personal appointments, notes, and coworkers’ shifts.

On a small screen, all of that information quickly becomes crowded.

So we decided to properly support tablets.

And one of the biggest lessons was this:

Tablet support is not the same as making a phone interface bigger.

On a larger screen, users expect to understand more of their month at once.

That changed the way we thought about:

- calendar density

- spacing

- typography

- shift badges

- notes

- personal events

- coworker schedules

We also wanted users to move naturally between devices.

You might check tomorrow’s shift quickly on your phone, then sit down with your iPad or Android tablet to plan the whole month.

So ShiftMate now works across iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and Android tablets with synced schedule data.

We’re still learning how people use shift calendars differently on large screens.

For anyone building multi-device apps:

When do you think a tablet interface deserves a true redesign rather than a scaled-up phone layout?
