Why shift workers need more than a normal calendar
A question we’ve thought about a lot while building ShiftMate:
Why isn’t a normal calendar enough for shift workers?
For someone working Monday to Friday, a calendar mostly answers:
“What do I have scheduled?”
Shift workers often need to answer several different questions.
What shift am I working?
When does it start?
Who is working with me?
When is my next day off?
How many night shifts do I have this month?
Does my personal appointment overlap with work?
That changes the way a calendar needs to work.
In ShiftMate, work shifts and personal events are intentionally different.
A Day, Evening, Night, or Off shift needs to be recognizable immediately without opening an event.
At the same time, personal appointments, notes, and reminders still need to fit around that work schedule.
This is also why we added things such as:
- custom shift codes
- shift-specific colors and emojis
- work alarms
- coworker schedules
- monthly and yearly statistics
- Home Screen widgets
The more we worked on ShiftMate, the more we realized that a shift calendar is less about “calendar events” and more about understanding your rhythm of work and life.
I’d love to hear from people who work rotating schedules.
What information do you check most often when you look at your work schedule?
