Does making something for yourself add friction - or a reason to return?
I’ve been thinking about this while building Selfime.
There’s a lot of appeal in opening an app, pressing play, and unwinding (tiktok, yt, ig etc.). Asking someone to create their own content means more effort before they get that payoff. When you’re making something to share, there’s an audience or feedback to help make that effort worthwhile.
But what if nobody else will ever hear it?
With Selfime, you’re recording something for yourself, in your own voice. I’ll be honest: that takes some getting used to. But hearing it back feels different because you know what’s going on in your life and what those words mean to you. The experience feels closer to a guided journal you can listen back to.
I’m still working out whether that personal connection gives people a reason to come back, or whether creating something is simply more effort than they want when they’re trying to unwind.
Would making something just for yourself feel worth that effort? And for builders who’ve explored this, does the creation step become part of the value, or mostly a hurdle to getting started?
