We got tired of building Anki decks for Chinese, so we built the app we wanted. Launching Saturday.
Hi everyone 👋
My friend Paul and I fell for Chinese while studying in Beijing and later in Suzhou.
Like most learners who get serious, we ended up in Anki: building our own decks, fixing them, keeping them alive. It worked, but it took hours before the first card was ready. And reading, listening, speaking and writing never fit on a flashcard anyway.
So we built Gushi: the whole language in one app, with spaced repetition deciding what comes back and when.
What it does differently:
• Every character comes with its tone, its parts, a short story that makes it stick, and where its shape came from (oracle bone to today)
• All nine levels of the new HSK 3.0 exam, 11,000 words, which most material hasn't caught up with yet
• Reading, listening, shadowing, writing stroke by stroke, and mock exams
• In English, German, Spanish and French
• Phone on the train, laptop in the evening: one account, one review history
We launch on Product Hunt this Saturday. If you'd like to see it go live, you can follow the launch here: https://www.producthunt.com/products/gushi?launch=gushi-2
Two honest questions:
1. If you've ever started learning a language and stopped, what made you stop?
2. What do you think of this breakdown? Would a story like this help you remember the character?
Try it now (first month free): https://gushi-chinese.online/ ... afterwards contact me :-)

Well said, Niklas 👏 Learning Chinese is definitely a journey, which means time is best spend on actually practicing and studying instead of building one’s own system. Gushi was created for people who want to have the freedom to choose on what Chinese skills they focus, while not having to worry about getting all the materials and different apps in place. Gushi delivers it all in one box and you can decide on what skills you want to work on in each study session!
Super interested in what you think about Gushi and the concept behind it! Please let us know :)
@pauljacobi Thank you ! :-)
