#5 on Product Hunt with zero top hunter support — was it luck or strategy? 🤔

by

🚀 We launched @Lumi.new on Product Hunt last week — ended the day at #5 of the day.

Not the #1 you often see here, but for us as a small indie team, it felt like a big win.

Here’s what we learned along the way:

1. No “top hunter”? Still possible.

We didn’t have a top hunter submit our product. As a result, the first hours were really quiet. Visibility was low and it felt discouraging. But once PH’s team featured us properly, things picked up — so while a hunter can help, it’s not the only way to get traction.

2. Talking to PH’s team matters.

We reached out directly to PH support, explained our situation, and they were super responsive. They believed in our product and gave us homepage visibility. That made a huge difference.

3. What we’d do differently next time:

  • Warm up the community earlier (share sneak peeks weeks before launch).

  • Be more active on socials (updates on X/LinkedIn during the day keep momentum).

  • Do more direct outreach (DMs to friends, colleagues, early users really work).

✨ Takeaway: Just shipping is already a success. Whether you get #1 or #5, putting your work out there, learning, and connecting with users is the real win.

Hope this helps anyone planning a launch soon! Happy to answer questions about our process.
