The "Silent Learner" trap: Why do so many people understand English well, but freeze when speaking?

by•

Hey everyone! 👋

Working on SciComm Coach, we noticed a massive paradox that affects millions of non-native professionals, researchers, and students:

They can read complex articles, write detailed emails, and understand podcasts with ease. But the second they have to speak in a high-stakes job interview, pitch on a Zoom call, or handle spontaneous workplace banter, their mind goes blank.

Traditional language apps usually teach vocabulary in isolation through multiple-choice quizzes, but oral fluency requires muscle memory, contextual confidence, and immediate conversational feedback.

We’re launching SciComm Coach tomorrow to tackle this with real-time AI voice role-play and simulators.

Before we go live, I’d love to hear from this community:

1. What was the most awkward or stressful moment you’ve faced speaking a second language?

2. What actually helped you break through that barrier: immersion, 1-on-1 coaching, or something else?

Looking forward to your stories and thoughts! 🚀
