Reddit now holds 10.24% of Google's top 3 organic positions. One in every ten top results belongs to Reddit .
The number of keywords where Reddit ranks #1 jumped 54% , from 8,993 in March to 13,872 after the May 2026 core update .
Reddit's top 3 share rose in all 20 niches tracked. The biggest gains came in experience-led categories — pets, education, sports, and e-commerce.
And yet.
Reddit's AI citations are becoming more selective. LLMs are moving away from broad, catchall sourcing toward precision.
Reddit's citation share in AI answers roughly doubled from November 2025 (2.3%) to late June 2026 (4.5%), making it the second most-cited domain overall . But that growth masks a deeper structural shift.
The September 2025 collapse was a warning.
Reddit's citation rate in ChatGPT responses collapsed from 15% to below 2% on September 10, 2025, when Google removed the num=100 parameter from its search API . ChatGPT was bulk-pulling Google search results; Reddit dominated those results; when bulk retrieval disappeared, Reddit's citations vanished.
Today's shift is different.
The May 2026 Core Update and June 2026 Spam Update finally caught up with Reddit's AI-translated pages. Reddit had aggressively machine-translated millions of pages and ranked them in different countries. That strategy is now unwinding . AI Overviews and AI Mode are citing translated Reddit pages less frequently as a result
The paradox is real.
Reddit dominates Google's organic rankings. But AI citations are becoming more selective — matching source type to actual prompts. Reddit wins citations when there are no better answers from brands . Quality and authority are winning over breadth.
What this means for you:
Reddit's Google rankings are at an all-time high. But AI citations are not guaranteed.
AI-translated Reddit pages are being penalized. The machine-translation strategy that worked in 2025 is collapsing in 2026.
Being on Reddit alone is no longer enough to win AI citations.
The window for brand content is open. When Reddit wins a citation, it is often because no brand has shown up with better content.

One thing I'd love to see is a breakdown by industry. I imagine healthcare, finance, and software might behave quite differently from lifestyle or shopping queries.
I like the distinction you made between search rankings and AI citations. Those are becoming two separate goals, and I think more marketers need to recognize that.

Interesting analysis.I think the key takeaway is that AI models are getting better at choosing the best source for a specific question, not just the most popular one.
Reddit will probably continue to do well for experience-based queries, but for factual or productspecific questions, original content from brands has a better chance of being cited.
