AI Overviews Are Here. SEO Just Got Promoted.
Today, July 22, 2026, Google officially launched AI Overviews and conversational AI Mode in France .
France was one of the last major markets to get it. Now it's here.
For two years, French businesses watched from the sidelines while the rest of the world figured out what AI search actually does to traffic. Now it's their turn.
Here's what the data from other markets says about what happens next.

The correlation is real.
Ruben Sebag, co-founder of Datashake's SEO/GEO entity, put it plainly: "The sources cited by AI Overviews overwhelmingly overlap with Google's top organic positions" . The AI that was supposed to kill SEO is pulling its answers from the results SEO already built.
Being cited as a source in an AI Overview gets you about 35% more organic clicks than not being cited . Those visitors arrive having already read the synthesis. They're further along in their decision. The click is worth more.
The tools are catching up.
Google added AI visibility reporting to Search Console. Not a separate tool. Not a new dashboard. The same place you already track search performance . The placement is the message: AI visibility is search visibility.
Bing went further. Bing Webmaster Tools now has a separate AI Performance report. It shows total citations, page-level citation activity, grounding queries, intent labels, topics, and citation share . Microsoft is building for the citation economy, not just the click economy.
What still can't be measured.
Google's Search Console AI reports show impressions. They do not show clicks . You can see that you appeared inside an AI Overview. You can't see whether anyone clicked.
Merchant Center now has AI performance insights that show what shopping-related questions people ask AI Mode and AI Overviews . But the queries are grouped, not individual. You get the shape of demand, not the demand itself.
The gap that matters.
A recent analysis from Peec AI argued that being cited is no longer enough . The real issue is what AI says when it speaks about your brand. Branded prompts reveal what LLMs associate with your company: price, support, reliability, ease of use.
A brand can be cited often and still lose. If AI consistently associates you with "expensive" or "bad support," visibility becomes a liability. The next phase of GEO is not just presence. It is reputation.
What this means for you.
AI visibility is now search visibility. Measure it in the same place, with the same discipline.
Get your Search Console AI reports running. Check Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance. The data is there.
Stop treating GEO as a separate workstream with its own budget. It's not new. It's just more demanding.
Track what AI says when it speaks about your brand, not just if it speaks about you.
If you're in France, the window is just opening. You've had two years to watch. Now it's your turn to move.
The SEO that was supposed to die just got promoted. It's now the official supplier of answers.
What I'm curious about. Have you checked your AI visibility reports yet? What did you find?

Interesting shift. I still think we're in the early days, but one thing seems pretty clear: if your content isn't good enough to rank organically, it's probably not going to be cited by AI either.
