What is the biggest problem with background removal in OBS today?

I’m building ProMatte, a free, GPL-licensed OBS filter for removing, blurring, or replacing webcam backgrounds locally.

I started it because existing options can require an RTX GPU, a subscription, a green screen, or cloud processing. ProMatte runs on the user’s own machine with no account, telemetry, or uploaded camera frames.

I’m especially interested in hearing from OBS users:

  • What do you currently use for background removal?

  • Is performance, edge quality, hardware support, or setup the biggest issue?

  • Do you prefer transparent backgrounds, blur, or replacement backgrounds?

  • What would make you trust a local AI video tool?

I built and tested it on a 2017 laptop with a GeForce 940MX, so slower-hardware support is a major focus.

I’m the maker of ProMatte and would value honest criticism, including reasons you would not use it.
