ProMatte is a free, open-source filter for OBS Studio that removes, blurs or replaces your webcam background in real time. It runs entirely on your own machine: no cloud, no account, no telemetry, and camera frames are never uploaded or saved. It was built and tuned on a 2017 dual-core laptop with a GeForce 940MX, deliberately, so that the numbers behind it come from close to the worst case rather than from a workstation. Every performance figure published names the machine it was measured on.

Maker here. I built this because every background-removal option for OBS either needed an RTX card I do not have, cost a subscription, or sent my webcam somewhere. I wanted one that ran on the laptop I actually own. That laptop is a 2017 dual-core with a GeForce 940MX, and it is the machine every number in the docs was measured on. It is close to the worst case, which turned out to be the useful place to develop from: the interesting engineering is all in not blocking OBS' render thread when the model is slower than the camera. A few things I would rather say up front than have you discover: * Windows is the only platform verified end to end. macOS Apple Silicon loads and works, confirmed on a real machine, but has no benchmarks. Linux builds, installs and loads and has never been run in a real OBS. * Every shipped model is single-person. A second person is only kept if the model happens to segment them. * A microphone or a mug in front of you is background as far as the segmentation models are concerned. * Nothing faster than that 2017 laptop has been measured by anyone. Projections for better hardware are in the docs and labelled as estimates. Happy to answer anything, including the parts that do not work well.

What is the biggest problem with background removal in OBS today?

I m building ProMatte, a free, GPL-licensed OBS filter for removing, blurring, or replacing webcam backgrounds locally.

I started it because existing options can require an RTX GPU, a subscription, a green screen, or cloud processing. ProMatte runs on the user s own machine with no account, telemetry, or uploaded camera frames.

I m especially interested in hearing from OBS users:

What do you currently use for background removal?
Is performance, edge quality, hardware support, or setup the biggest issue?
Do you prefer transparent backgrounds, blur, or replacement backgrounds?
What would make you trust a local AI video tool?
