🔹What Inspired Us to Build PracticeLookML? The inspiration for PracticeLookML came directly from the struggles faced by BI professionals like myself. 🔹The Core Problem: Risk, Cost, and Friction When I was an analyst in 2019, I was introduced to Looker and LookML. I quickly learned the rules of the road - I was not allowed to make changes to LookML code because of two critical barriers: 1.Risk to the Underlying Model: Every change, even a small test, had the potential to change or affect the production model, creating system-wide problems. 2.The Cloud Bill Fear: Each query run resulted in a computation query cost (GCP/cloud bills). Teams were terrified of experimentation leading to unexpected costs. I intensely wished for a platform where I was allowed to practice LookML and related complicated, high-impact concepts-like PDT, joins, HTML-based dimensions, and KPIs-without the risk or the hefty bill. This was the core thought behind developing our platform. 🔹How Our Approach Evolved (The Solutions) Our launch process evolved to solve those two problems and, critically, to unlock new potential for teams: 1. The Sandbox Environment: We eliminated the risk and cost by creating a browser-accessible, real-time simulator that lets developers write code against a live, safe schema, receiving immediate feedback. This directly solves the "risk and cost" barrier. 2. Organizational Enablement: We realized this tool could solve organizational bottlenecks: 3. Onboarding: Organizations can use PracticeLookML to train new joiners without worrying about escalating cloud bills. 4. Hiring: Interviewers can use the platform to assess Looker Developer competency through real-time, practical coding challenges. 5. EdTech Integration: EdTech platforms no longer have to worry about Looker licenses. They can use this tool to train candidates to excel not only in PowerBI and Tableau but in Looker as well, addressing a huge skills gap in the market. 🔹PracticeLookML isn't just a learning tool, it's a risk-free, cost-controlled environment for building, testing, and scaling LookML expertise for the entire BI ecosystem.
