Starting Pickle Rooms was the result of years of dabbling, learning, and sheer curiosity (plus a few wins along the way!) I began by failing to sell t-shirts on the internet. After getting no sales, I tried to give the T-shirt brand some meaning, and so decided to throw a music event! Quite unexpectedly, I somehow managed to pile 150 people into a bars basement! It was great! It went way better than I was expecting…but, making money throwing music events is hard…let’s try something else… So, I tried selling lampshades using Facebook ads! Right out of the gate, I smashed it. Orders coming in hot and fast, with Christmas round the corner, I reckoned I could make a killing! Pooft! My supplier ran out of stock. Sounds good…but it definitely was not. Your boy was left with orders I couldn’t fulfil, and Facebook ads I’d paid for! Damn, I was crushed. Okay, screw it, let’s try something else. I somehow became a customer of Yankee candles, and started selling them on ebay. This worked immediately. Waheyy! I remember sitting in a cafe with my wife, with sales pinging on my phone, and my wife telling me to put the price up of the candles we were selling. Guess what though? The margin was as slim as the excuses I made to myself, after failing yet again. Alright, I’ll try Google Ads. Nice, these worked. I somehow did £30,000 in the first year! Wahey, let’s try and scale it… I put my stock in a 3PL warehouse, where they’d ship the orders for me, and started ramping up my Google Ad spend! Nope, life punched me in the face yet again. My return on Ad spend halfed. I went from being profitable….to not. Even worse, I got De Quervain's Tenosynovitis in my hands, and couldn’t type on a computer for months! After recovering, I wanted to start my next gig…but, what next? What could I build that had a big flywheel in the background (SEO), had some amount of virality, and I could spin into any company I wanted? I know, a Newsletter! Awesome, I get to share with people a few of my stories, like… -How I got 474,000 views on Reddit in two months -How I Got 97,000 Views on LinkedIn in 2 Weeks -How I slept with Beyoncé (okay, that one’s a lie…) Interested? You are? Great! Take a browse, laugh at my shit jokes, and maybe steal a couple of tactics I’ve picked up over the years! Drop me an upvote, and maybe even….dare I say it….sign up to the newsletter!
