The anonymous traffic problem

by

This is still the strangest part of running a website to me.

Analytics tells you a session happened. Maybe a country. Then the person is gone and you have no idea if they were a buyer, a competitor, or a bot.

We started tracking which companies land on our own site and my first reaction was not excitement, it was regret. There were names in there I would have replied to that same morning if I had known.

When someone visits your site and leaves without filling anything in, do you try to figure out who they were, or do you let it go?

I will probably just let most of it go. What interests me more is the behavior behind the visit like what they looked at, how deep they went, whether they came back, and where they dropped off. Knowing the company can be useful, but without intent signals it can also create a lot of false positives and signals.

Fair point. Company name on its own is pretty useless, half of them are agencies or people just browsing. The ones I actually pay attention to are the repeat visits where someone hits pricing twice in the same week. Even then I only see it after they are gone.

What behavior do you trust most before you decide a visit is actually worth chasing?
