In July we came out of stealth and published our search benchmarks with the eval code in public so anyone could challenge the numbers. A lot of you did, which was invaluable for us!
But the message that kept popping up: "Can I just call the model through this too?"
We were slow to say yes. You see, gateways are a commodity and routing a request behind one key is a billing problem, not a hard engineering problem, and we're a search company. And we didn't want to spend our engineering on it.
But these aren't two problems. There's one problem seen from two angles: your model and your data live in separate places, and the only thing connecting them is an agentic loop you wrote, you debug, and you own forever.
We'd spent many months optimizing one leg of that journey and left everything around it alone. Turns out it doesn't matter how fast the search is if the model has to go across the network to reach it.
