How do you check a .com name before you buy it?
I'm the solo maker of NameDaemon, which is live on Product Hunt today. I'd like to ask a question before I tell you anything about it.
When you have a .com name in mind, what do you check before you pay for it? My own list ran to five tabs: is it free, is it any good, does it mean something unfortunate in another language, are the social handles free, and what was the site before me.
That list is why I built NameDaemon. It has free tools on a daily snapshot of the whole .com zone, and a Domain Report that puts those checks on one page you can send to a co-founder. No sign-up for the tools.
Two things it will not do, on purpose: a name that is not in the snapshot is never shown as "available" until a live registry check confirms it, and drop dates are estimates, not promises.
What I'd like to hear from you:
Which check do you skip when you are in a hurry?
What have you been burned by after buying a name?
What would you want a report like this to show that it does not?
I'll answer every reply today.
