YouTube lyrics out of sync? Check the recording before the delay

by•

I’m Bas, the maker of LyricLayer. Here is a short troubleshooting guide for anyone trying lyric overlays on YouTube.

1. Check the recording first.

An album track, live performance, radio edit and slowed upload can share a title while having different lyrics, intros or tempo. Compare the actual words and verse order. If they differ, choose another recording or search using the artist and track name. A delay adjustment cannot fix the wrong version.

2. Check two points, not just the opening.

Listen at the first verse and a later chorus. If both are early or late by roughly the same amount, a fixed timing offset is a useful next step. Make a small adjustment, then recheck both points.

3. Separate drift from a single bad line.

If the first verse lines up but the gap grows later, one global offset is unlikely to solve it. Look for a different performance, an edited intro or a tempo change. If only one line is mistimed, line timing repair may help after you have confirmed the recording. LyricLayer has timing controls and verse-loop practice in its 0.9.x release line.

4. Treat missing lyrics as a separate case.

YouTube captions and lyric databases are different sources. No captions does not prove a lyric match exists elsewhere. LyricLayer still needs a suitable result from an enabled lyric provider; it cannot promise every song or perfect timing.

If you run into a problem, which pattern is it: no match, wrong words, a constant offset or growing drift? A public video link, browser/extension version and two example timestamps make the report much easier to investigate. Please leave account details and private browsing information out of the report.
