I'm Adrian, the maker of Lafai, and I want to tell you why I built this.
After 30 years in software engineering and as an amateur runner, I am passionate about nutrition. I'm convinced that, as Linus Pauling once said, "Optimum nutrition is the medicine of tomorrow". I always thought I knew what I ate and how to avoid unhealthy products. Until one day, when I scanned a "perfectly fine" boxed meal and asked AI (Gemini) if it was healthy. It was not. I continued scanning and that's how I discovered that many products I'd been buying didn't match my lifestyle at all.
Through testing different AI prompts and lifestyle profiles, I noticed something amazing: the AI didn't just tell me a food had too much sodium, it taught me what excess sodium, sugar, or refined flour actually means for my health. The label told me the what. AI told me the so what!
But working with AI, I knew that getting these tailored answers required carefully crafted prompts, and typing them manually every time was too tedious. So I built Lafai, packing expert built-in prompts into a seamless camera app that requires zero typing. One funny thing: my student son complained that the 'General Ingredient Check' was too strict for him, like any young people wanting a relaxed lifestyle. That's how the 'Youth & Student Realistic Check' prompt was born. 😄
