We use Vercel Functions, specifically after() in Next.js 16.
Every tutoring turn runs two models: a grader scores the student's message, then the tutor replies within that verdict's boundary. The student needs the reply streaming back instantly, but we also need a permanent record of what the grader decided and why. Writing that inline would make every student wait on a database round trip.
after() let us stream the response and persist the full grading verdict afterwards, off the critical path. That became one row per graded turn.
It paid off immediately. Reading the first 2,187 rows from a live chemistry course, we found 111 turns where our own tutor gave away the answer and then asked a closed question. We fixed it mid-term. The transcripts alone would never have shown us that.
