Hey PH!
In January, Claude Max blocked the auth path Cline and Roo Code were using. The official API was never restricted, only the subscription. The fix was a URL change.
While fixing mine, I checked my bill: 250 per month. 70% of it was commit messages and variable lookups going to Opus at 0.17 per call. Your AI bill is probably 60% waste too. The ban fixed my auth. It did not fix the habit.
So I built a router and ran a real benchmark, 30 API calls, 10 developer tasks, 3 setups, every response published unedited.
The number that stopped me:
Frugal tier on a summarization task: 0.00. The model was free during preview. Opus on the same task: 0.021. Both scored 9/10. Same quality. One was literally free.
Full benchmark (30 calls, LLM-judged):
Balanced: 8.7/10, 6 of 10 beats Opus, 0.08 per task, 53% cheaper
Frugal: 8.3/10, 3 of 10 beats Opus, 0.003 per task, 98% cheaper
Opus direct: 8.6/10, baseline, 0.17 per task
The honest answer: Balanced beats Opus on 6 of 10 developer tasks at half the cost. Frugal delivers 97% of Opus quality at 1.6% of the price. Where Opus still wins, SQL optimization, unit test generation, complex open-ended design, those results are published too.
