Kilroy AR - Augmented Reality - Leave a note, follow a trail - in AR (For Your Valentine)

by

Kilroy AR -  is an augmented reality app where you can leave notes with a message or poem at a location. For everyone who walks by to see, like and comment on. Or a personal note for just you and a friend.

Leave messages everywhere; at a travel location, a restaurant, places that have special meaning to you. Enjoy

Hi Product Hunters! I made this new iOS app called Kilroy AR - Augmented Reality. I thought there’s a problem, and with AR becoming popular, I thought of a solution: ❓ The problem is that while I travelled the globe I found quite a few places damaged. So from structures in Egypt to the viewpoint at Cape Point I encountered name inscriptions in the artefacts/ walls and even bad graffiti (I like good graffiti). Now I know that people want to leave some kind of trail behind to let others know they have been there. So I thought about the “Kilroy was here” story: Kilroy worked during World War II at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts and left “Kilroy was here” in over-sized letters on various parts of ships, a checkmark as to the areas that he had approved. Ships began leaving the coast with “Kilroy was here” marked in various locations of the ship. “Kilroy was here” soon became a popular message to leave at various destinations. Before long, Kilroy’s mark had been noted throughout Europe and in the South Pacific. (source: Wikipedia) I thought it might be cool to be able to leave messages at locations for others to see and make a comment when they pass by. What does that mean? What do I want? I want to leave messages, look at messages with something useful, make a comment and be able to leave a note for someone I follow, which only that person can see (and me, of course). 💡 I thought it would be nice to do in augmented reality. So I took the backend I had from my other app, designed and developed Kilroy AR. And, here we are. You are able to look around and look at notes without logging in. That said, you have to make sure to sign in to comment and leave notes. You can choose from a few different note designs. Leave a message by tapping the screen. Public or private: it is automatically public unless you click the red lock and choose from a list of people you follow to make it private. Type the note and that’s it. You can comment on posts as well as like them and there is a stream of notes in the feed. You can see where the notes are on the map and if someone leaves a personal note (just for you), you get a notification and a location in your feed where you will be able to find it. 🔐 It is rated 17+ as per Apple request for the moment. Which is understandable, because who knows what it is going to be used for. The app filters for objectionable content with a filter called Bad Words which filters the text for objectionable words. And it filters for objectionable profile pictures via a Core ML library integrated called “Not Suitable For Work” (Open nsfw model - Copyright 2016, Yahoo Inc.) You can flag posts for inappropriate and if a few people say so, we’ll check it out and remove the post and/or block the user if needed. The individual will be blocked for you in the feed. 🗺 Is it accurate? It is as accurate as your location device, so it depends: on the iPhone model, as they seem to have different accuracy. I tested on a 5SE and a 7+, which made a difference already. Depends on inside or outdoors: it works not great indoors, much better outside and even better when there are few building around (like Hyde Park). Also if you believe notes are not in the right position, too high above the ground, etc. tap the reset button. I take it that the future will make it more accurate, especially when location and recognition of buildings at that location are integrated. Let me know what you think!
