Home Rec - Capture any sound your Mac plays

by
Ever heard something playing on your Mac and wished you could just keep it? A loop in a video, a synth demo, a track in your browser. Home Rec records whatever your Mac is playing in one click — no drivers, no setup, no account. It lives in your menu bar, captures everything in pristine quality, and drops the file right on your Desktop, ready to drag into Ableton, Logic, or anywhere you work. Free and open source.

Hey Product Hunt 👋

I make music as a hobby, and I kept hitting the same wall: I'd hear something playing on my Mac — a loop in a video, a synth demo in the browser, a reference track — and I just wanted to capture it cleanly. But every option meant installing virtual audio drivers, rerouting everything in Audio MIDI Setup, and hoping it worked. For something that should take one click, it never did.

So I built the tool I wished existed. Home Rec lives in your menu bar and records whatever your Mac is playing as a lossless 48kHz WAV — one click, no drivers, no routing, no account. A live waveform shows you signal is actually flowing, and the file drops straight onto your Desktop, ready to drag into any DAW.

It started as a weekend hack for myself last year and slowly became something I'm proud to share. It's free, open source, signed & notarized, and collects zero data. Next on the roadmap is per-app capture (v1.1) so you can record just one app and keep Slack pings out of your mix.

I'd love your feedback — especially from other producers. What would you want it to do next? 🙏
