For those that are missing the option "Try new Gmail". After logging out and back in, the option appeared on my Settings drop down menu.

It's certainly a new look but there's a few quirks that would make me rather use the old design. 1. The compose and pause/resume inbox buttons, make the width 100% 2. The right icons bar + hangouts are not hide-able any more, leaving you with that much less room 3. Related to #2, I have two columns of mail, left side is my normal inbox, right side column is emails with certain flags (yellow exclamation marl, purple question mark, etc) and in addition to #2 it's even less room to read subjects. 4. When viewing an email the subject is HUGE and there's a bunch of whitespace to the left of it (obvious to match the text of the sender below it but the icons at top are 100% left aligned... see what I mean at https://goo.gl/sbBMSw It's a good start but there's a few quirks and things I'd change to make it more usable on larger desktop screens when you have labs/plugins enabled.

Does anyone else find the design to have too little contrast? Everything is so light gray in the new design that nothing stands out - including new emails!

Personally, I agree: it's long overdue. I give it a big thumbs up and really appreciate the integrated calendar + updated Tasks features. Am still wrapping my head around Inbox, which is great but, Gmail? Still a winner! I think with this release, they may have pushed MS and Apple's mail products (and any 3rd party extensions, products, etc.) far down the competition ladder. With the Gmail update, I've remove so many 3rd-party extensions that I once relied on heavily; consider this a great advantage to Chrome. Now, if only the mobile for iOS would receive the same upgrade as has the desktop (for Gmail)... though I realize the answer there is= Go Android :)

It looks great, cleaner & responsive. However, there are a lot of UI inconsistencies, such as elements that seems too "displaced" to me. The compose button is a totally "no no". The overall experience hasn't changed much, which would really help users on a future transition.

I'm so glad they added the Snooze email functionality. It's my most used feature in Boomerang, no longer have to pay $5/mo for it.
