Why do most hot launches go completely quiet just a few days later?

by•

Noticed so many products get top spots and hundreds of upvotes on launch day but by the end of the week nobody is talking about them.

Feels like a lot of traffic comes just to see the launch event rather than actually use the app. Having a solid group of daily active users before you launch seems to be what keeps things alive.

What do you guys do right after launch week to keep new signups coming back?

Launch-day traffic is borrowed. Search traffic is the part that keeps coming back on its own, so the week after launch is a good time to start on it. Two things that worked for us: write pages for the problems people search for (not for your product name), and open Search Console from week two. The first queries you rank 10–30 for tell you what people actually expect from you, and those are the pages worth improving first.

The launch itself still helps later: the mentions and links you collect that week are what lets those pages rank a month or two down the line.

I would separate people who signed up from people who completed the main task

Ask a few who stopped where they got stuck and fix that step before sending another announcement. Getting the same users to finish something useful tells you more than another spike of visitors

Ours went quiet too, and we weren't even hot. A few hundred visits on the day, two sign-ups, and as far as I can tell neither has run it yet. What I got wrong was thinking launch day is when people try the thing. It's when they look. Trying comes later, if at all, and only when you ask one person at a time. The only thing that still gets replies a week on is a number I measured, not the product.
