What is the most important thing - Business wise- in the AI age?

The most valuable thing you own in the AI age isn't your AI. In my opinion, It's your data model. My 2nd vote would be Sales!

I've been building business software for the last year, and I keep watching companies make the same expensive mistake. They add an AI tool for support. Another for writing. Something for invoices. A notetaker. Each one is genuinely good at its job.

And each one is a silo.

Six months later somebody asks a simple question — "what did we actually sell this month, and which of it got collected?" — and there's no answer. Not because the data doesn't exist. Because it exists in eight places, in eight shapes, and nothing reconciles.

Here's what I think people get wrong: they assume AI reduces the need for a central system, because the AI can just go fetch things. It's the opposite. An assistant is only as good as the data it can see. Give it a fragment and it gives you a confident answer about a fragment — which is worse than no answer, because it looks right.

The uncomfortable version of this: the AI layer is the least defensible part of any software company right now. Models commoditise every few months. What doesn't commoditise is a coherent, connected record of how your business actually works — the ledger that balances, the payroll that reconciles, the customer history that's genuinely complete.

Anyone can generate an app now. Almost nobody can generate the system underneath it.

So my working answer to "what matters most" is: own the substrate. Whatever you're building or buying, ask where the data lives afterwards. If the answer is "in this vendor's tool, in this vendor's shape," you've rented a capability and given away the thing that compounds.

The boring old idea — one place where your business is written down — didn't die in the AI age. It became the precondition for AI being useful at all.
