I went back and read the actual forum guidelines again, and there's a line that keeps rattling around in my head. A

Product Hunt team member wrote it directly in a discussion thread: "If it's not a genuine question or a genuine insight, we won't approve the comment—or we'll put it in self-promotion" .

The official summary is even simpler. Before posting, ask yourself two things: Is this a genuine question I have that I want the community to answer? Is this an insight that will be helpful to other builders and product geeks? If the answer isn't a confident yes to one of those, don't post .

I've been thinking about how many things I've wanted to post that weren't actually either of those. They were just... thoughts. Or observations. Or things I wanted to say out loud. Not questions I genuinely needed answered. Not insights that would help anyone else.

How do you tell the difference between "this is a genuine question" and "this is me wanting to say something"? And have you ever caught yourself trying to post something that didn't meet either bar?
