The Conversation That Made Me Rewrite My Entire Onboarding

by•

Someone told me they almost quit during onboarding. Not because it was broken. Because they could not tell if they were doing it right.

There was no feedback, no confirmation, no sense of progress. Just steps that seemed to accept input and move on without telling them whether the input was correct.

I had built onboarding for someone who already knew the product. For a new person, it was a hallway with no lights.

I added one thing. A small confirmation after each step that said what just happened and what comes next. Completion went up 30%.

The problem was not the steps. It was the silence between them.

Have you ever gotten feedback that made you realize your product was built for someone who already understood it?
