The code I read and the code I trust

by•

I have noticed a split in myself that I am not proud of. I read the code I wrote by hand. I do not read the code the model writes for me. I just look at the result and decide if it seems right.

That is fine until it is not. And when it is not, I am in a stranger's house with no idea where the light switches are.

The strange part is that I am not lazy. I would never accept a pull request from a colleague without reading it. But generated code arrives with a different feeling. It is not a person asking for my approval. It is a machine that has already done the work, and reading it feels like doubting a gift.

I am trying to break that. Now I read everything before I run it, even when it looks obviously correct. It is slower for about a week and then it becomes the only way I can sleep.

Do you read the generated code, or do you trust the output? And has that trust ever cost you?
