Our most-shared content was a screenshot of a bug.
We looked at social shares and backlinks across 2 years of content. The single most-shared asset was not a blog post, a launch, or a landing page. It was a screenshot a user had posted of a rendering glitch that made our logo look like a smiling face.
Shares: 4,100. Backlinks: 62. Referred signups: 1,800.
Our best-performing official content that year got 340 shares and 11 backlinks. We had a content team of four and a design system, and a user's accidental screenshot outperformed all of it by an order of magnitude.
We did not try to recreate it. We tried to understand it. What spread was not the bug. It was a moment of human recognition, something slightly wrong that was also friendly. Every piece of content we had made was correct and forgettable.
What has spread from your product that you did not make, and what did it have that your marketing does not?
