Is it possible for a solo individual to build a successful open-source product for the masses?

Several platforms/products that exist today seem to be from large teams that took months (or maybe years) to build it.
Wanted to understand what would it take for just 1 individual to build something in the open source segment and ship it successfully across geographies?
Assumptions:
Maker knows Linux and Python
Maker is yet to build a product
Maker doesn't wish to monetize at all
Maker has explored AI a bit too much and is now in an analysis-paralysis mode
