I measured 14 comments under launches vs 22 in forum threads. The difference was not the writing.
I've been on Product Hunt about a month, mostly lurking, then writing. I kept a rough count of where my comments landed, because I wanted to know why some disappear and some get answered. The numbers below are from my own profile, nothing clever.
Under product launches: 14 comments. 0 upvotes, 0 replies. All 14. Some of them were long and specific, one quoted the maker's own line and asked about a real trade-off. Nothing.
In forum threads: 22 comments. Most got 1-2 upvotes within hours. One turned into a back-and-forth with the thread's author over two days. Two people asked me follow-up questions.
My own thread in the forums: 2 views after a week. Two. That one hurt more than the silence under launches, because I'd been told the fix was to write something of my own.
What I think is happening: a launch page is a crowd moving in one direction, and a new voice in a crowd is just noise. Nobody is suppressing it, there's simply no one standing still to hear it. A forum thread is a conversation, and a specific answer to a specific person gets read by that person, at least.
So the thing that made the difference wasn't better writing. Same writer, same week, same effort. It was being in a place where someone was actually waiting for an answer.
Two things I'd like to know from people who've been here longer:
Does the 2-views-on-your-own-thread thing ever change, or is a thread without an audience just dead on arrival?
And for people who've had a thread take off: what was the actual first hour like? Did replies come on their own, or did it need a push?
