How does the PH homepage algorithm actually balance the sheer volume of daily launches?

by

Hey Product Hunt community,

With hundreds of products launching every single day, I’ve been trying to understand the underlying architecture of homepage visibility and traffic distribution.

As a maker, when you launch a product, you often notice it doesn't always appear directly on the main featured feed for every visitor or on every device/browser.

This got me curious about how the platform balances fairness vs. algorithmic curation:

1. Personalization & Device Caching: Does Product Hunt serve customized feeds/leaderboards based on user activity, region, or device session cache?

2. Featured vs. All Launches: How does the system transition a launch from the raw "All Launches" queue into the main "Featured" homepage feed?

3. Traffic Curation: Given that standard visitors only scroll through the top 10–20 products daily, what key engagement metrics (velocity, user reputation, active discussions) trigger higher homepage distribution?

Would love to hear from experienced hunters and makers who have analyzed PH algorithm patterns or launched multiple times! How do you navigate feed visibility during launch day?

with so many products launching daily i can understand why some kind of ranking system is needed. the hard part is keeping it fair.

i'd also love to hear from people who have launched more than once. the patterns between successful and quite launches would be really interesting.

the homepage difference is interesting. i've seen my feed look different from what other people see so peronalization might play a role,

i feel like comments and real conversations probably matter more than just the upvote count. a launch with active discussion feels more alive.

I don't think there's one single metric. It probably combines engagement, upvote quality, and how consistently people interact with the launch over time.

I'm curious if anyone here has launched multiple products and noticed patterns between different launch days. That would be intresting to hear.

I think fairness is a difficult balance. If everything were purely chronological, great products could get buried, but if it's too algorithm-driven, smaller makers might struggle to get noticed.

i've been curious about this too. sometimes two similar products launch on the same day and get completely different visibility

Two things I can say from watching a launch today rather than from theory. Upvotes are hidden for the first four hours, which tells you the ordering is deliberately not a live popularity readout early on, and that the early window is treated as fragile. And the visible board caps out well before the full set of launches, so most products are not competing for rank at all, they are competing to be rendered. The part people underrate: whatever the algorithm weights, the input distribution is not the launches, it is the audiences the launches arrived with. A product with three hundred people already waiting looks identical to the algorithm as a product with an unusually good first hour. So the honest answer to how it balances volume might be that it mostly does not have to. Very few launches generate enough early signal to need separating.

I have wondered about this too. sometimes the homepage looks different on my laptop and phone, which makes it even more confusing.

After launching a couple of products i noticed traffic coming in waves rather than consistently. It always made me wonder if the feed gets refreshed dynamically based on engagement instead of fixed rankings.
